Washington's rookies will be thrust into action with many eyes on 1st Rd receiver Jahan Dotson, but another rookie will also see significant time early on as well.

First year tight end Cole Turner's role should be significant with Logan Thomas on the PUP list. Although Thomas could possibly be back for Week 1, Turner will get the lion's share of reps at tight end, along with John Bates.

Day 4 of Training Camp featured the tight ends working on red zone packages. Turner shined with two receptions, both resulting in touchdowns. The 5th rounder understands the nuances of the game and puts himself in the best position to excel with end zone 50/50 balls, while utilizing every bit of his 6'6" frame.

Turner credits his basketball background for his success, looking up to former NFL TE's Jimmy Graham and Antonio Gates. In fact, Turner was named First-Team All-League in basketball during his senior year of high school, while also leading the state of Oregon in receiving with 76 receptions for 1,325 yards and 20 TDs.

Turner doesn't lack confidence and his skillset set fills a need for Washington. Although Bates is coming along, he doesn't have the ability the Nevada pass catcher does as a receiver, particularly in the red zone.

Turner had the following to say during a recent team presser.

“I think I'm a guy who can come in immediately and help out in the pass game, especially in the red zone."

Although Turner was a Day 3 draft pick, fans should be excited for what he'll bring to the offense. He led all tight ends in the Mountain West, while at Nevada with 10 touchdowns (a 110.4 QB rating when targeted). He was one of the most productive pass catching TE's in the nation and his ability to block out defenders in the end zone was evident.

The absence of Thomas during 7 on 7's and 11 on 11's, provides Wentz and Turner the opportunity to develop chemistry. Realistically, even if Thomas is active Week 1 vs the Jaguars, he'll likely be on a scripted snap count, creating more opportunities for Turner.
